Thanks to two Americans, the best in Medicine and BLIS will receive cash prizes

For the next two years, the two best performing students in Makerere University’s Faculty of Medicine and the best Library in Science (BLIS) graduate will receive cash prizes courtesy of two Americans. Robert Cheshier former Director of Health Sciences at Case Western University and Dr. Frederick Robins introduced the awards whose first beneficiaries were the 1999 best medical students. In a press release, Dr. Maria Musoke of Makerere University’s Albert Cook Library, said those that received the 2001 awards were Dr. Harriet Mpairwe and Dr Joseph Okia Akankunda while the BLIS award was taken by Erisania Kibaya. The graduates received their awards from Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor John Sebuwufu at a ceremony held at Albert Cook Library. When the award was first introduced, it was only medical students benefitting but now one BLIS student has also been included, Musoke stated. Other students awarded were Dr. Daniel Namuguzi who got the Association of Surgeons of England award for being the best student in surgery. The best student in Internal Medicine, Dr. Flavia Matovu, got the Association of Physicians of England award. Dr. Leonard Tutaryabwa got the Michael Hutt Foundation award for best student in Pathology. Dr. Faith Ameda with best research project got the Tropical Health Education Trust/Reuter Foundation award. Dr. Musoke urged the graduates of the medical school to continue making use of the resources at the Albert Cook Library for their research.
